Be Smarter, Not Stronger: A Tip That Beats Training

Hey Cracksters,

Have you ever looked at a crack and thought, "I need to be stronger to get up that thing" or "I need more fight on this offwidth for success"?

If so, you're not alone. But, a big misconception in climbing is that you have to train more and do more reps to get better. While that certainly helps in some cases, for us cracksters, it’s often different. More often than not, we need to be smarter, not stronger.

Finessing Your Technique: The Power of Feel

Here’s an offwidth example of how finessing technique instantly works:

When an offwidth gets hard, where do your eyes look? Usually directly into the crack in front of you. We often forget to look down to ensure our foot placement is perfect, or we’re too tired to do so, or the crack geometry physically doesn’t let us.

If you have already finessed the outside foot technique, you shouldn’t even have to look down at your foot placement. You should be able to do it by feel, and not by sight.

With other climbing, you don’t get this ‘feel’ option for your feet. If you don’t look at them, you’ll place them wrong and slip. Offwidths are different; feel is everything. Once you know the technique, your lower body should be climbing by feel, and you shouldn’t have to look down all that much.

If you’re really smart, you will remember the ‘extra’ foothold options as you pass them with your eyes, then only look down if you need to place your foot on this when your upper body passes it. This is what finessing technique is all about, and this is being smarter, not stronger.

Why Your Hand Doesn’t Fit (+The Fix)
Hey Cracksters, I get told a lot by people that they really struggle with thin hand cracks. For sure, they are difficult, but I often see the same mistakes occurring when people try these jams. Most people focus 100% of their effort on what to do with their hand once it’s in the crack. While that is important, actually 50% of your focus should be on what to do with your hand when it’s out...
The Grade Calculator: How to Use Grades to Route Read
Hey Cracksters, I’ve just got back from a trip to Bohuslän in Sweden last week. If you’ve never been, the granite there is world-class! While climbing a few routes, I was reminded of a specific skill that is so important for onsighting: being able to do ‘on-route grade calculations.’  Most people think of a grade as just a number in a guidebook, but when you're onsighting, that number is actu...
5 Reasons you'll Climb Harder with a Good Partner
Hey Cracksters, Although climbing can be a very social sport, the actual climbing itself is usually pretty individualized. It’s just you against the rock, the project, or the gym problem. However, I was recently reminded that having a solid partner and working as a real team is incredibly important. It can actually help you progress much quicker than if you’re just grinding away by yourse...
